To recap on last week's motivational post, people are motivated by five main things: physiological needs (the ability to get food, shelter and other basics to survive), safety needs (a safe and non-threatening work environment), social needs (contact and friendship with fellow workers), ego (recognition, rewards) and self-actualisation (realising dreams, using talents and potential).
Before getting to any of the other motivational stages the first and most basic must be fulfilled - the ability to get food, shelter and other basics.
By default, you have fulfilled this for your staff - you have given them a job and therefore a way to get what they need to survive.
